Leadership - a Relational Issue?

Introduction

The tutorial titles are a guide - Lynda will ask you for your specific objectives.
Leadership is about strategy, management systems, resourcing, recruiting, planning etc.  And mostly, it is about people.  People run the systems, update the inventories, make the products, design the services etc.

Often, the technically excellent member of a team does not make a great leader of that team - it is a different skill set that is required.

We lead through people and firstly, we need to lead from within - know ourselves and the impact we have on others.
Leaders hold the keys to the success of the organisation or business.  They can apply coercive power and use fear to get things done, or they can taking a more nurturing, coaching approach and share their knowledge and their power in order to help team members to grow more competent and confident.

Leaders need to be aware of the impact they have on others!  They need to understand stroke theory, and patterns of behaviour (ie Drivers) and how people discount and run rackets and do not always pay attention to boundaries.  Understanding life positions helps too!  And all of this they need to apply to themselves in order to lead others effectively.

Possible objectives:
  • Berne's ideas on leadership, and how they have been developed, particularly by Schmid and also by Tongue
  • The relationship between the leaders' drivers, and the strokes they give
  • How to manage boundaries and performance through contracting
  • The Role Concept (Schmid)
  • Leadership and Life Positions
  • Leadership and Drivers
  • The Leadership Triad (Korpiun)
